A transcription of the text has been published, but it has not been digitized. See da Gama Pimentel Barata, João. (1989) “Apêndice B – Transcrição de duas «traças» de 29 naus da Índia, de João Baptista Lavanha”, in Estudos de Arqueologia Naval, vol. II, Lisboa, INCM, p. 234-235.

Introduction

These two documents are the only known examples of Regimentos Speciais (Special Rules) detailing the architecture of specific ships, as opposed to Regimentos Generais (General Rules), which detailed the rules for the construction of a type of ship. Both of these documents were written in 1598, and concern the construction of Indian naos, although they were written by different authors.

Both works contain João Baptista Lavanha’s signature in addition to that of their authors, although there is no discussion of co-authorship in the text. It is possible he reviewed or certified the work in some capacity.

The Authors

Sebastião Themudo and Gonçalo Roiz (Gonçalo Rodrigues) were master shipwrights who built naos along the Riviera de Lisboa for trade with India. In 1607 the king appointed them to official positions as mestres (masters), having received requests from both them for the appointment. Following Themudo’s death, Roiz was appointed to the position alone, and was given a salary of 30,000 reis per year, with an additional 2000 reis for each nau or navio de gávea that was launched without mishap.
