Resumen del Estudio / Study Summary

La comunidad indígena Wayuú que habita en la zona costera-desértica de La Guajira configura su territorialidad a través de la navegación y la construcción naval tradicional. Este fenómeno ha generado un registro material que ilustra las diversas fases de un complejo técnico naval donde se han identificado las zonas de construcción de embarcaciones tradicionales de madera, el conocimiento de los carpinteros de ribera, las zonas de fondeo, zonas de embarco, rutas de navegabilidad, hundimientos y las zonas de abandono de dichos barcos. Por lo tanto, a través de una aproximación arqueológica es posible describir la biografía de la embarcación, donde se caracteriza su construcción, uso, abandono y su relación con los procesos de formación de sitios culturales en áreas costeras y desérticas. Con base en la recopilación y análisis de información proveniente de las fuentes orales, documentales y de la materialidad, se propone un marco de interpretación que permita comprender desde una perspectiva histórica, este particular Paisaje Cultural Marítimo.

Por otro lado, las relaciones tradicionales de la navegación y la construcción naval a lo largo del tiempo les han permitido a los seres humanos ampliar los marcos de la realidad, puesto que tiene la capacidad de transformar y fortalecer las infraestructuras sociales. A partir de allí surge el interés y la relevancia de este proyecto, ya que desea conocer aquellas tradiciones que cada vez están tendiendo a una desaparición, generando consigo una pérdida de conocimientos y de formas de relacionarse con unos espacios determinados, produciendo a su vez unas trasformaciones en las formas de apropiación y de identidad de estas comunidades.

La pérdida de los conocimientos ancestrales entorno a la construcción naval y de las formas de navegación tradicional cada vez es más común no solo en Colombia sino en el mundo entero, dichas pérdidas son producidas por la llegada de macroempresas y, por ende, la búsqueda de nuevas oportunidades de trabajo en algunos casos. A partir de allí es necesario preguntarse: ¿Qué está generando la pérdida de los conocimientos ancestrales entorno a la construcción naval y de las formas de navegación tradicional?, ¿Qué transformaciones han tenido estas prácticas y técnicas a lo largo del tiempo? y ¿Cómo se está produciendo la trasmisión de conocimiento en estas comunidades?

The Wayuú indigenous community that lives in the coastal-desert area of ​​La Guajira configures its territoriality through navigation and traditional shipbuilding. This phenomenon has generated a material record that illustrates the various phases of a naval technical complex where the construction areas of traditional wooden boats, the knowledge of the carpenters on the banks, the anchoring areas, boarding areas, routes of navigability, sinkings and the abandonment areas of said ships have been identified. Therefore, through an archaeological approach it is possible to describe the biography of the vessel, where its construction, use, abandonment and its relationship with the formation processes of cultural sites in desert and coastal areas are characterized. Based on the compilation and analysis of Information from oral, documentary and material sources, an interpretation framework is proposed that allows understanding, from a historical perspective, this particular Maritime Cultural Landscape.

On the other hand, the traditional relationships of navigation and shipbuilding over time have allowed the human beings to broaden the framework of reality, since it has the capacity to transform and strengthen the social infrastructures. From there the interest and relevance of this project arises, because want to know those traditions that are increasingly tending to disappear, generating with it a loss of knowledge and the ways of relating to certain spaces, producing at the same time transformations in the forms of appropriation and identity of these communities.

The loss of ancestral knowledge around shipbuilding and traditional forms of navigation is increasingly common not only in Colombia but throughout the world, these losses are caused by the arrival of macro-companies and, therefore, the search for new job opportunities in some cases. From there, it is necessary to ask: What is causing the loss of ancestral knowledge around shipbuilding and traditional forms of navigation? What transformations have these practices and techniques had over time? And how is the transmission of knowledge taking place in these communities?

 

Objetivos de la Investigación / Research objectives

General / General

• Caracterizar las relaciones tradicionales de navegación sostenible y la construcción naval como estrategia de procesos de territorialización en el espacio náutico de la Media Guajira a partir de una aproximación etnográfica, fuentes documentales y un estudio de cultura material.

 

• Characterize the traditional relationships of sustainable navigation and shipbuilding as a strategy of territorialization processes in the nautical area of Media Guajira based on an ethnographic approach, documentary sources and a study of material culture.

 

Específicos / Specifics

• Identificar las formas de navegación tradicional sostenible a partir de la relación entre los sujetos anfibios de las comunidades y su entorno.
• Comprender los complejos técnicos de la construcción naval tradicional sostenible de las comunidades mencionadas.
• Reconocer los factores que afectan la construcción naval y la navegación tradicional en la Media Guajira.

 

• Identify the forms of traditional sustainable navigation based on the relationship between the amphibian subjects of the communities and their environment.
• Understand the technical complexes of traditional sustainable shipbuilding in the mentioned communities.
• Recognize the factors that affect shipbuilding and traditional navigation in Media Guajira.

 

Resultados Obtenidos y Perspectivas a Futuro / Results Obtained and Future Prospects

En esta investigación se ha tenido en cuenta la maritimidad, los espacios marítimos y la construcción naval artesanal a través del conocimiento de unas técnicas y tecnologías específicas, por medio de las cuales ha sido posible plantear dos ejes que han fundamentado el proyecto. Por un lado, se encuentran los complejos técnicos y, por el otro, las formas de navegación. En estas dos grandes categorías ha sido posible evidenciar con mayor profundidad cómo se relacionan las comunidades con la materialidad y el territorio en el que viven.

A partir de allí, dentro del complejo técnico se han establecido tres enfoques: el primero es una revisión de fuentes y antecedentes de construcción naval tradicional; el segundo son las técnicas implementadas, abordando los materiales que se utilizan, su trasformación, uso, tradición, trasmisión y materia prima; el tercero, por su parte, se vincula a un registro y análisis de la información obtenida en campo, a través de grabaciones, fotografía y diarios de campo. Así mismo, las formas de navegación se comprenderán a partir de los conocimientos sociales y culturales del entorno, a partir del ecosistema náutico y de la relación que se establece con este entorno, por medio de entrevistas. En este orden de ideas, el presente estudio empezará a comprender la construcción naval artesanal no solamente desde el complejo técnico, sino que a su vez buscará entender cómo se da la formación de sitio arqueológico de aquellas embarcaciones que son abandonadas. Esto, para poder entender las continuidades o disrupciones en la materialidad, las técnicas y la simbología que estas albergan.

In this research, maritimity, maritime spaces and artisanal shipbuilding have been considered through the knowledge of specific techniques and technologies, through which it has been possible to propose two axes that have supported the project. On the one hand, there are the technical complexes and, on the other, the forms of navigation. In these two large categories, it has been possible to demonstrate in greater depth how communities are related to materiality and the territory in which they live.

From there, three approaches have been established within the technical complex: the first is a review of sources and history of traditional shipbuilding; the second are the techniques implemented, addressing the materials used, their transformation, use, tradition, transmission and raw material; the third, for its part, is linked to a record and analysis of the information obtained in the field, through recordings, photography and field diaries. Likewise, the forms of navigation will be understood from the social and cultural knowledge of the environment, from the nautical ecosystem and from the relationship established with this environment, through interviews. In this order of ideas, this study will begin to understand artisanal shipbuilding not only from the technical complex but also will seek to understand how the formation of an archaeological site of those boats that are abandoned occurs. This, in order to understand the continuities or disruptions in the materiality, the techniques and the symbolism that they harbor.
