Oeiras 1 Wreck

Filipe Castro

Introduction

Two sport divers from Oeiras, Rodrigo B. Rocha de Araújo and Pedro M. S. Abrantes Duarte, declared in 1999 the existence of two iron guns in the area of the Oeiras oceanic swimming pools (Proc. CNANS 99/54). This find was verified in April 2000 by a CNANS team integrating Miguel Aleluia and Pedro Caleja.

In June of the same year the construction of a marina in the area triggered an salvage operation for which a private contractor was hired. A total of five iron guns were removed from the area where the east jetty was built and placed nearby.
